Reduced costs

Cost breakdown of structural steel - 1981 and 2000 50% cost recution in real terms since 1981

The figures above show the cost breakdown of structural steel in multi storey buildings for 1981 and 2000. Compared to 1981, the total cost of structural steel has been cut by 50% (in real terms) as a result of improved efficiency by all parts of the sector.

Steel cladding is also the 'material of choice' for more than 90% of industrial and semi industrial buildings. As for structural steel, efficiency is the production of hot rolled coil, from which flat and light gauge construction products are made, have meant that the real costs have fallen by 31% over the last 20 years.

Benefits of steel buildings

Buildings can be rapidly constructed using steel based components that are efficiently manufactured offsite and therefore are of high quality and with few defects.

Steel framing and cladding systems provide the scope, in association with other materials, to design buildings with low overall environmental impacts.

Steel building construction systems provide flexible spaces which have the potential to be easily modified and adapted so that life of the building can be extended by accommodating changes in use, layout and size.

Steel components can be dismantled relatively easily. Reclaimed steel products can be reused or recycled without degradation of properties

The development of high performance, coated, steel cladding systems has encouraged the greater use to areas such as retail, leisure, agricultural buildings

Energy Efficiency

Steel can provide as much as an 8" thick wall to be filled with R-30 insulation (The average Home today has R-6 to R-11 rated insulation). This not only gives you tremendous savings on your energy bill (up to as much as 40%), but it can also serve as external sound buffers. Our normal wall designs are 6" metal studs, so we can use R-19 insulation. Wow!
Steel is clearly the best when it comes to energy efficiency.

Fire Resistant

Steel is non-combustible. This is a known fact and has been for some time. Once a fire starts in wood framed homes, most are completely burned to the ground including all personal items. Since steel is non-combustible the fire will not have an easy means of travel. A well designed house can be finished with no wood in it at all, completed with only Fire resistant materials.

Quality and Cost

Steel has been used for many years in Commercial Construction due to its superior strength over wood. It is now time for the Residential Housing Industry to take advantage of the durability of steel and the power it possesses to save the home owner from costly maintenance fees. This transformation will also aid in the fight to save the few remaining ancient forests. According to Time, June 25, 1990, "Less than 10% of the ancient forests that once covered the Northwest remains." The quality is outstanding. Steel will not warp, crack, split, shrink, shift, or decay. This increases the life span of the house insuring that years from now, your home will still be as straight, as sturdy, and as beautiful as the first day. Building with steel will also help keep the value of your home for many years to come.

Recyclable

Steel is 100% recyclable. From the beginning of construction, there is very little waste and, even if the house should be destroyed and replaced, the steel will still be recyclable. More steel is recycled than paper, aluminium, glass and plastic combined. In fact, over the last decade, one trillion pounds of steel were recycled. This is easily achieved since most steel recycled comes from destroyed Homes, businesses, and cars from past generations. This is only the beginning of the new "Steel Construction" era. Once the methods of construction catch on among contractors the price will drop and make steel framing a reality for anyone. Maybe this will give the endangered forest a chance to flourish with new life.

Strength and Durability

There is no doubt that when steel is erected properly it is much more resistant to force than wood. Steel Framed Homes provide more safety from high winds, fires, lightning, and pets than wood framed Homes.
